BEACH DAY - Friday, May 9th
Our class has earned all the letters in FANTASTIC with whole-class compliments. We voted this morning and the students would like to have a Beach Day! On Friday, your child can dress for the beach and bring a beach towel. Swimsuits are okay as long as shorts are worn on top and your child won't be uncomfortable all day long. Flip flops, sundresses and sunglasses are great, too.
Weather dependent, we will take our books and beach towels outside for Quiet Reading after lunch. ;)

Reporting About Weather with our Buddies!
Our 4th Grade Buddies helped us document our Weather reports using their iPads! It was a fun project! Your child's project will be e-mailed to you individually! Here are a few photos of the recording process!

Self Portraits
Our class has spent several weeks creating Self Portraits using techniques from a variety of artists. Their artwork is now on display in the Gallery of Mann in the front hall. Stop by and check it out! Each first grader has a series of self portraits! Thank you to all the Art Awareness parents who made this wonderful project happen!

Another Great Week!
We have had another great week in First Grade!
This week we have learned a lot of information about Penguins. The kids are learning some important research skills --- asking questions, answering questions, using texts to find information, etc. through this study. We will continue our reading next week to learn more. We will also be working on an Art Awareness project that will allow the students to present some information that they have learned in a 3D format. Watch for more details once the kids learn about the project on Tuesday!
In Math, we have been talking about Base 10 --- this skill is important as it shows us how numbers are "made." We have been working with a fun iPad App -- Base 10 blocks. The kids love it!
This morning we talked about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the change that he caused in the United States.
I hope you have a great long weekend!

Welcome Back!
Welcome back and Happy 2014! I hope you had a wonderful, relaxing and fun Winter Break! Our family enjoyed LOTS of togetherness (maybe a little too much?) and fun despite a sick little one....
A few quick announcements:
1. There will not be Spelling Words this week due to the shortened week. We will resume our regularly scheduled programming next week!
2. Please remember to send LOTS of warm winter gear. The students will be heading outside for recess most days at lunchtime. There is an indoor option most days, however I encourage them to go outside if possible to get some exercise.
3. We would appreciate donations of any games or indoor recess appropriate activities! I brought my personal items from my previous classroom (legos, K'nex, etc.) however we would appreciate any other games, puzzles or other items that you would like to donate. If you are like me, you are doing the post-holiday "purge" at home and may find somethings to donate! Nothing electronic, please!
4. I am sending home a Parent Teacher Conference Form this afternoon (Wednesday). Please return it as soon as possible, marking your 1st, 2nd and 3rd choices for time slots. I will be doing conferences throughout the week of January 27th, with my evening conference times on Wednesday, January 29th. I am also offering lunch-time conferences (12:10 - 12:30) if you are available to meet during the day. Remember that Thursday January 30th and Friday, January 31st are half days fo school, 11:00 dismissal.
Let's have a GREAT short week!
